Descriptive Words -Adapted from Pica, Rae. (2007). Moving and learning through curriculum. Clifton Park, NY: Delmar Cengage Learning.
Materials
- List of adjectives/adverbs (i.e.: graceful, light, forceful, smooth, droopy, gentle, strong, floppy, careful, enormous, tiny, excited)
- Using your list of adjectives and adverbs, discuss with the students what the word might mean. They may not know the meaning, so now is a great time to introduce new words. Remind them to use prior knowledge and comprehension strategies to predict the meaning of a word.
- As you call out a word, have the students perform the corresponding action.
- Make sure to start with words that students know well or can readily understand. When necessary, demonstrate.
- Ask the students to depict a person, character, animal, or object matching the descriptive words. (i.e. an enormous giant, teeny tiny fairy)
- Act out descriptive words that describe the outdoors (i.e.: breezy, sunny, warm, cool, muggy)
- Read The Teeny Tiny Woman and have the students act out the story.
