4 Voices -Adapted from Pica, Rae. (2007). Moving and learning through curriculum. Clifton Park, NY: Delmar Cengage Learning.
Materials
- No materials needed.
- Explain to the students that there are 4 different ways of using the human voice: whispering, speaking, shouting, and singing.
- Ask the students to tell you which voice they think is the biggest (in terms of size) and which might be the smallest. What would the different voices look like if they were lines? Would they be cur vy or straight? Would they be short or long?
- Have the students say their name in all 4 voices.
- Collaborate with the students to create a specific kind of movement for each of the 4 voices. (I.e.: whispering- tiptoeing, speaking- walking, shouting- forceful jump, singing- gallop)
- Call out the voices, one at a time, and challenge the students to say their name and perform the corresponding action at the same time.
- In groups, have the students each perform one of the movements representing one of the 4 voices- but without any accompanying sounds. Have the other students in the group, identify which voice they are demonstrating.
- Recite nursery rhymes in the 4 voices.
- Read poems in the 4 voices.
